Two of every five acres of land on this hot and hungry planet are cropped or grazed.
A soccer field worth of tropical forest is logged or burned every six seconds.
Agricultural sprawl has overrun 30 times more of the global landscape than urban sprawl.
WE ARE EATING THE EARTH.
I’m so grateful The Atlantic has published the first excerpt from my upcoming book, an essay introducing the main earth-eating theme.
It’s not long, and you can read it here. I hope it inspires you to pre-order the book.
We can all see when we look out the window of a cross-country flight that the land we use for our homes, offices, schools, cars, and everything else is dwarfed by the land we use to grow food. We just haven’t really grappled with the implications—for the planet, the climate, and the future of our big-brained, short-sighted species.
Let’s grapple!
Thanks so much for your interest in my argument. And the book isn’t just an argument; it’s a story, hopefully an entertaining one, about how we got into this mess and how we’re starting to work on getting out. Enjoy!
Reminder: I’ll have public events in NYC June 30, KC July 7, DC July 10-11, Miami July 14, SF July 16, Denver August 6, and all over the place all fall.
Thanks again, every pre-order helps.
